The kitchen table has always been a symbol to me of celebrations, joy, laughter, where we studied and did our homework, a cozy spot to sip a cup of coffee and chat with a friend, something to dress up with fancy dishes and a roast or to keep casual with a giant box of pizza as the center piece. Or a spot to hold hands together and share stories of the day or a place of inspiration.

For many, knowing where your next meal is coming from or where you are going to sleep that night is a daily struggle. Writer Maria Buteux Reade tells us IPH (formerly known as the Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless) has been feeding and sheltering our region’s most vulnerable citizens for 35 years. IPH is serving more than 2,000 local citizens through the Albany Emergency Shelter, Safe Haven, and Hoff man Family Center, located in the Sheridan Hollow neighborhood of Arbor Hill; Sister Mavis Jewell Medical Respite at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy; and Danielle’s House in Amsterdam. Regular contributor Kathleen Willcox sat down with Gareth Crawford, president of the Carey Institute for Global Good, located on a 100-acre campus in Rensselaerville, and discussed the institute’s mission, “dedicated to making a better world by contributing to a strong, educated and just society,” and how they are achieving those goals.

Our Notable Edible in this issue is Fictitious Farm. Farmer Scott Seeley shares his healthy animal farming philosophy and small business survival techniques and is currently utilizing ancient mountain grazing traditions “silvopasture” to raise their pigs.

Northeastern Herbes de Provence, Apple Jam with Star Anise, two recipe takes on the classic Coq Au Vin and a trip for a cold one at Big Slide Brewery and Public House in Lake Placid round out this issue’s journey.

As we gather together around the table and move into this autumn equinox of 2019, let’s toast to the good things by sharing and giving to those in need. I hope you have the opportunity to invite someone to sit at your table.
